Overview

The Colts is a non-profit performing and tour youth organization that operates primarily during the summer.

It provides developmental opportunities for youth including participation in competitive drum and bugle corps. The role of the Assistant Director/Tour Manager is to manage the day-to-day operations of the drum corps when on the road for the summer. Experience and maturity is required to ensure the continued excellence and improvement of the Colts tour program. This highly organized and self-motivated person must be an effective communicator and listener, and will work between the Director and the corps staff, volunteers and members to ensure that the organization is operating in accordance with organizational philosophies and as a world-class organization by maximizing effective use of time and resources..

Responsibilities

• Oversee and direct the day to day operations of the drum corps on summer tour
• Work from home February though May to arrange for summer housing by contacting sponsors and independent housing locations. Send requests, document information, prepare tour itineraries, follow up with confirmations, plan travel strategies, prepare and plan for unique days such as laundry, mail, free days, grocery stops, stadium rehearsals, etc.
• Work with office staff to organize and implement policies and procedures
• Work with office staff to effect communication to the organization as needed
• Primary public relations contact with all constituencies while on the road. Public address responsibilities, fundraising, creating opportunities for promotion of the corps. Primary spokesperson with media while on tour in absence of Executive Director,
• Work with Staff Coordinator to organize and implement schedules and facilities usage for rehearsals
• Responsible for routing and directions to housing sites, performance venues and in and out of town, in coordination with lead driver. Responsible for accurate travel time estimates to and from housing and show sites. Ensures lead driver has planned highway routing to next destination, including well-planned and efficient rest stops.
• Coordinate with the transportation manager to ensure correct staffing and coordination of schedules in advance of tour in lining up drivers. And on tour in managing time and schedules for efficiency and safety
• Work with Transportation Manager to maintain all vehicles while on the road.
• Work with staff coordinator f to coordinate facilities, policies, procedures, etc.
• Contribute to organizational press releases, newsletters, and other publications
• Attend all staff, show sponsor and DCI management meetings on the road
• Manage corps expenditures while on the road. Ensure accurate accounting of expenditures and mileage reports for vehicles

Preferred Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree
• Two years experience on a touring drum corps staff, ideally in management, and preferably at a Division I level
• Two years experience in other management positions or related fields
• Experience working with and coordinating a large staff of volunteer and paid staff
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• A strong bonus is possession of a CDL class B license with air brake and passenger endorsement for bus and/or a CDL class A license with combination vehicle endorsement for semi truck
• Driver’s license clear of any major infractions
• Excellent organizational and planning skills
• Computer fluency, including experience with database, spreadsheets and word documents
• Demonstrated high integrity in financial and managerial matters
• Self-motivated and able to handle multiple projects with little or no supervision
• Performing arts experience, preferably with a Division I drum corps
• A personality that can maintain for calm in a storm

The ideal candidate is not required to live in the Dubuque area, but must be available to travel all summer on the road with the drum corps from the start of Move-In to the last contest of the season. Attendance at most camps is necessary to ensure a coordinated effort with the rest of the corps and to become visible to the corps members.
