Program

As day gives way to darkness and the horizon welcomes a new moon, emotions heighten in the stillness as the Colts begin their 2016 program, “Nachtmusik.” Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” unfolds to embrace the change and prepare us for a journey through night that includes a tapestry of rhythms and colors woven to create an experience reaching all corners of our emotional space.

The delicacy of Mozart’s “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” is challenged in a way that brings energy, action, and movement with purpose to an otherwise peaceful scene. The rhythm of nachtmusik is met with an interpretive style that pushes our understanding of what we know, reflecting the hustle and bustle of night, and delivering an unexpected burst of spontaneity.

The peaceful night reemerges as darkness reveals the stars to provide the serenity of a “Silent Night.” A fresh voice is given to this traditional hymn, infusing layers of sound while balancing complexity and tranquility in the moment. But the calm is soon interrupted by rhythmic sequences and contemporary soundscapes through an aggressive interpretation of the Moody Blue’s “Nights In White Satin.”

When the stars align and night reaches for the dawn, we can feel the passage of time in Michael Kamen’s symphonic poem, “New Moon In The Old Moon’s Arms.” The moon — old and new — offers a ‘glimpse of the future in the light of the past’ and fades with the anticipation of another day.
