The Colts Youth Organization launched the Colts Summer Band in 2006 to provide a performance ensemble opportunity and summer lessons for instrumental music students in grades 4-8. Nearly 50 young people were members of the group in the inaugural year.

The program runs four weeks, and includes a weekly private or semi-private lesson and concert band rehearsals. The season culminated on Thursday, July 6th, with a concert at the Dubuque Arboretum.

The director of the group is Brian Enabnit, a member of the instrumental music staff for the Dubuque schools. The Dubuque Area Summer Band program was founded by Cynthia Mueller, band director at Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Dubuque.

The summer band has been using the wonderful facilities at Eleanor Roosevelt Middle School and benefits from our strong and growing partnerships with the Dubuque Community School District and the entire community.

Plans are to further expand the program in the future to include more public performances, more enrollment and a larger teaching staff. The Colts have also begun building a music library for the ensemble and for use by other local band programs during the school year.
